SLA 2011: Alternative uses of the library degree

SLA Europe DigiComms

SLA Europe board member Bethan Ruddock will be speaking on a panel for the Leadership and Management Division at the SLA conference next month. Here, she gives us an idea of what to expect:

I’ll be speaking as part of a panel for the LMD-organised session ‘Alternative uses of the library degree’, on Tues 14th, 2-3:30.  It’s a really interesting session for me to be a part of, as I came out of library school directly into a non-library job. Although my work at Mimas is library/info related (I work as Content Development Officer for Copac and the Archives Hub), it’s definitely not a traditional librarian role!

Moderated by Ruth Wolfish, the panel will allow people in a variety of non-traditional library roles to talk about what skills are valued by their organisation.  Panellists (who also include Kim Dority, George Plosker and Jean Fisher) will talk about which types of individual/skillsets are successful in their organisation, and how they see that changing in the future, as well as looking at what has made them successful – and what they’d have done differently!  I’m giving the new professional perspective on this, and I’m really looking forward to hearing what the other panelists have to say – especially as I expect my future career to be in non-traditional roles.

I’m also helping to organise the LMD Marketing Section Breakfast Meeting: Executing Alignment and Marketing Yourself.  Again, we’ve got a great panel to discuss branding and self-marketing: you’ll get to hear from Rebecca Jones, Stephen Abram and Jane Dysart, sharing their wisdom about how to align your personal brand to fit in with, and appeal to, your user base.  This breakfast will also see the LMD Marketing Section Virtual Swap-N-Shop, which will give you the chance to see some of the great online and virtual marketing and promotional tools that members have produced.  A great opportunity to swap ideas!
