From the President’s Chair – November 2013

SLA Europe DigiComms

In my last post, I promised more news about the SLA Europe Board and Sub-Committees.

Firstly, I am delighted to be able to tell you that Sam Wiggins will be our President Elect for 2014. Over the last 3 years, Sam has done sterling service for SLA Europe.  During 2013 he chaired our Events Committee and coordinated a very successful programme. Sam was recently appointed to the SLA Nominating Committee.

Tracy Z Maleeff has been appointed our US Regional Representative; Tracy is the Chair of the Annual Conference Advisory Council, former Chair of the Legal Division, and is active on the Conferencing Re-Envisioning Task Force. Marie-Madeleine Salmon becomes our Regional Representative for France;  Marie-Madeleine was the instigator of the very successful European Librarian Theatre series held at past Online Information Conferences and is a long-standing Director to the Board.

In addition, Anneli Carter is joining the Board as the new Chair of the Events Committee, with three of our 2013 ECCA winners joining her on event programming – Lauren Lawler, Penny Andrews, and Lizzie Caperon.  A fourth ‘ECCA’ – Laura Williams – is getting involved with the Early Career & Conference Awards Committee.

On behalf of the Chapter I would also like to extend my thanks and gratitude to the following, long serving Directors – all of whom are Past Presidents of SLA Europe – who are relinquishing their current Board positions at the end of 2013.

Neil Infield, an SLA Fellow, former Editor of the SLA Europe Newsletter, and the first Chair of the DigiComms Committee, will continue to support SLA as a member of the SLA Online Content Advisory Council.

Géraldine Clément-Stoneham  is stepping down as Membership Secretary but will continue to serve SLA on the Information Ethics Advisory Council and the SLA 2015 Annual Conference Advisory Council.

Penny Leach is now the Leadership & Management Division’s Conference Program Planner for the 2015 Conference. Penny will continue as a Director for SLA Europe, but is stepping down as Secretary.

We also bid a fond farewell to Liz Blankson-Hemans,  formerly our  PR Chair, and previously Chapter Cabinet Chair for SLA, and Darron Chapman, Chapter President in 2012 and Nominations Committee Chair in 2013.

If you would like to support the Chapter and our work across the information industry, we would love to hear from you.  Please contact the Nominations Committee (plug_emp(true, ‘=f-badc6;emp:org;emp:df-e430;emp:sla-europe;emp:-56043a#e2.db*;emp:president’);“>) or any other member of the Board to discuss potential opportunities and the benefits of volunteering to support the continued development of SLA and our industry in Europe.

Finally a reminder about our final event this year. David Gurteen and Allan Foster will be delivering a Knowledge Cafe based on the findings of Business Information Review’s 2013 Business Information Survey. Run in conjunction with Aslib’s AKISS Conference and sponsored by The New York Times, this event will start at 6.30pm on Wednesday, December 4th. It will be hosted by Norton Rose Fulbright LLP at their state of the art offices near London Bridge. This should be an excellent event to conclude another exciting year for SLA Europe. I hope to see you there!

All the best,
Stephen
