Innovation in action at this year’s Internet Librarian International, by Katherine Allen

SLA members benefit from a 25% discount on the full fee at the Internet Librarian International conference. Here is conference organiser Kat Allen on why you should go.

Internet Librarian International (ILI) will take place at Olympia, London on 18-19 October with workshops on 17 October. SLA members benefit from a 25% discount on the full conference fee.

‘Innovation in action’ is this year’s ILI theme, and the conference features almost sixty presentations and case studies from many different library and information settings, taking in Ireland, Scandinavia, North America, Western and Eastern Europe, the Caribbean, Australia and Africa as well as the UK.

This year, for the first time, ILI features three keynote speakers, each of whom will support the theme of innovation. IFLA’s Stuart Hamilton will focus on libraries’ important role as catalysts of innovation in the digital age; Mia Ridge, Digital Curator at the British Library, will explore the new technologies and new behaviours arising out of digital scholarship; and Jan Holmquist of Denmark’s Guldborgsund Public Library will share examples of modern world challenges to which libraries are the solution.

Each day, delegates can choose between three parallel tracks:

  • Engagement – real impact on real communities
  • The learning library, the learning librarian
  • New tech for a new world
  • Understanding users and influencing use
  • Improving search, supporting research
  • Setting digital content free

Highlights include sessions on how big data is changing libraries, making engagement work, using open data, customised content, and supporting the research process.

Also new for 2016, delegates and speakers will be celebrating the open and sharing nature of libraries and info pros at ‘Peers with Ideas’ – a variety of informal sessions where delegates can share ideas, swap tips and discover new tools. Sessions will include the ILI Big Read, an App Swap, plus informal sessions on making a positive impact, and working with vendors.

SLA members are entitled to claim a 25% discount on fees for the main conference using code SLA25 when registering. Discounts are also available for multiple delegates from the same organisation.
