SLA Europe DigiComms

SLA Europe is pleased to announce the winners of the Early Career Conference Awards 2017, in partnership with the Academic and Legal Divisions of SLA. Congratulations to Amy O’Donohoe and Ruth MacMullen. The ECCA winners will attend the SLA Conference & INFO-EXPO in Phoenix from 18-20 June 2017.

Amy O’Donohoe is co-sponsored by the Academic Division. Amy is the Customer Care (Collections) Coordinator at Royal Holloway University, which combines two significant interests for her in the field: collection management and user engagement. She recently graduated from Robert Gordon University with an MSc in Library and Information Studies after studying via distance learning while working at the London Library and Hurstpierpoint College library respectively. Amy has a strong background in policy development, teaching, and raising awareness in the care system which has fed into her work as a librarian. Her dissertation considered the positive benefits that libraries can have on the life outcomes of care experienced young people.

Ruth MacMullen is co-sponsored by the Legal Division.  Ruth is the Copyright & Licences Officer at York St John University. She completed her MA Information and Library Management in September 2012, and is currently studying for an LLM in Intellectual Property Law at The University of Edinburgh. Her professional interests include rights and reuse of copyright material, accessibility and access to information, and scholarly communications publishing and licensing.  She is a member of the Libraries and Archives Copyright Alliance, and the Universities UK Copyright Working Group.

Early Career Conference Awards cover all expenses including Conference registration, transportation, food, lodging, and incidental expenses.  In return the Award winners will participate in and assist with their co-sponsoring Division’s events during the Conference and report on their experience for their Division’s and for SLA Europe’s newsletters and blogs. Award winners are expected to continue their involvement with the co-sponsoring Division and with SLA Europe after the conference.

The SLA Europe Board extends congratulations to the winners:

It is with great excitement that we are able to announce the 2017 Early Career Conference Award winners. This year we received a high number of applications for each award, from lots of enthusiastic and committed early career professionals. Our winners this year stood out by showing dedication and great potential in their chosen specialist fields.  The Early Career Conference Award is a fantastic opportunity for new professionals to be exposed to all that SLA and the profession has to offer, and we are certain that they will find conference in Phoenix to be an excellent professional development opportunity. Members of the Board look forward to meeting the winners at the conference, where they will be formally presented with their awards at the International Reception.

Our thanks go to the Academic Division and the Legal Division for co-sponsoring the Early Career and Conference Awards. The award is also a great opportunity to strengthen partnerships between the Chapter and other SLA Divisions, and we are pleased to be able to work with these divisions again this year.

SLA Europe’s Early Career Conference Awards are now in their eleventh year and are awarded annually to library and information professionals who have been working for less than five years since library school or are enrolled in a European graduate-level programme of study in LIS. Applicants are required to be first-time attendees at an SLA Annual Conference and interested in a career related to their co-sponsoring division. The application process involves writing a personal statement, providing an up-to-date CV, and obtaining a recommendation from a professional in the LIS field.
