SLA
The SLA is the leading association for information professionals and special librarians. Based in Washington DC in the United States, SLA currently has 12,000 members with 25 subject Divisions and 59 regional Chapters. Each Division and Chapter has newsletters, publications and meetings, and it is here you will find a wealth of contacts in your own "special" subject area.
SLA Divisions

The SLA has 24 subject Divisions - each concentrates on information activities in a certain field and provides a forum for networking between members with similar concerns. You may join as many as you like - membership of the first one is free with additional ones US$12 each.
Advertising & Marketing - advertising, marketing and related areas
Biomedical & Life Sciences - pure and applied biological sciences
Business & Finance - all aspects of business and finance libraries, including business information sources
Chemistry - chemistry and chemical technology and related subjects
Competitive Intelligence Division - encompasses all aspects of competitive intelligence, including planning, identifying decision makers intelligence needs, collecting and analyzing information, disseminating intelligence products and services, evaluating intelligence activities
Education - education, library education, and special librarianship
Engineering - engineering practice and the broad spectrum of technical knowledge pertinent to industry and engineers
Environment & Resource Management - management of resources in natural and man-made environments
Food, Agriculture & Nutrition
(279 members) all aspects of food, food technology, nutrition and agricultural production
Government Information Division - to bring together those interested in the value, organization and management of government information sources with those responsible for the provision and improvement of government library services.
Information Technology - new technologies and systems for the processing and control in any subject; has special sections for government information, micro-computers, online, and technical services
Insurance & Employee Benefits - private, social and government insurance, including employee benefits, financial and estate planning
Leadership and Management Division - serves as a forum for the exchange of information and knowledge on the theory and application of management and leadership techniques to special libraries, focusing on issues such as planning, organization, budget and cost control, communication, performance, and the impact of technology on libraries, in order to develop and enhance the managerial skills of its members.
Legal - law and regulatory affairs; emphasis on private law firms, business and government
Military Librarians - military library service and defence issues
Museums, Arts & Humanities - museums, historical institutions, publishing and the creative arts
News - news and media organizations
Petroleum & Energy Resources - petroleum and petrochemical industries as well as other depletable or renewable energy resources
Pharmaceutical & Health Technology - pharmaceutical, biomedical, cosmetic and health care fields
Physics-Astronomy-Mathematics - all aspects of information management in these fields
Science-Technology - all areas of science and technology, including computing
Social Science - social sciences information and research
Solo Librarians - information managers without professional peers in the same organisation
Transportation - includes air, road water and urban modes of transport
SLA Chapters
There are 59 regional Chapters covering geographic areas mainly in the United States and Canada. Membership of the first is free.
